Tour Details

No prior mountaineering experience is needed for this tour, but it is only recommended for experienced hikers who are comfortable with long hiking durations with a backpack. You are an experienced mountain hiker and comfortable with varied terrain. This tour will include passages over hills, rock, ice, water, and crevasses. There are no trail tracks, and it is assumed you have surefootedness for steep descents and narrow ascents, including an ascent of a long metal staircase. We hike in a group as a roped team and adapt to the weakest participants. Please bear this in mind if you are accustomed to a faster hiking pace.

Day 1: Journey to Jungfraujoch and descent to the Konkordia hut 2850m

Meet your guide at the Jungfraujoch, tour some of the attractions together and then make your way to the mighty Aletsch Glacier. Begin your hike to Konkordiaplatz. Enjoy panoramic views and a short break on the wide glacier surface. At this point in your journey you will be standing on top of ice roughly 800 meters thick- the thickest glacier surface in Europe. Reach the metal staircase and access the Konkordia hut, where you will settle in for the night and enjoy evening alpine views.

Day 2: Via Grünhornlücke 3280m to Finsteraarhornhütte 3048m

After a hearty mountain breakfast, you will descend the stairs back to the glacier. At this location, the Konkordiaplatz, four different glaciers converge. You will climb to the Grünhornlücke via the Grüneggfirm and then take a short break to marvel at the impressive Finsteraarhorn, the highest mountain in the Bernese Alps at 4272m. Cross the Fiescher glacier to reach the sunny terrace of the Finsteraarhorn hut.

Day 3: Ascent over the Galmi glacier to the Oberaarjochhütte 3256m

The third day begins with a leisurely start. First you will descend to Rotloch, where the Fiescher and Galmi glaciers meet. You will then ascend to the Oberaarjoch and take the stairs to access the Oberaarjoch hut on a small rocky ledge above the glacier.

Day 4: Highlight of the week: Ascent of the Oberaarhorn 3631m

On the final day you have the option to climb the Oberaarhorn at 3631m. If you do not want to complete this part of the tour, you may relax at the hut. Depending on conditions and group size, your group may be divided, and some guests will have already made this summit the previous day. Views from this remote peak are extraordinary. Standing at the top, at least 24 4000-meter peaks come into view. After your summit experience, climb over the Oberaar glacier and along the Oberaar reservoir to reach a mountain house. Take a cab over the Grimsel pass to Meiringen, where this multi-day tour comes to an end.
