The anniversary pick on the Jungfrau

The alarm clock rings at 2.50 am. We rub the sleep out of our eyes and have breakfast. Soon it's off to the shoe room - put on the climbing harness, tie the mountaineering boots and tie on the anniversary pick. At 4.00 a.m., nine of us leave the Mönchsjochhütte. We descend on the hut path to the Jungfraujoch. There we rope up and hike over the glacier to the Jungfrau spur. The anniversary pick shows its full strength when carving footholds and Freddy, our mountain guide, swings it professionally as usual. A steep ramp leads us to the spur, which we climb on beautiful rock. Arriving at the breakfast spot, we have something to drink and fortify ourselves for the next part. Over the firn shoulder we climb towards the Rottalsattel. Here, too, the anniversary pick is used. It and Freddy make the climb much easier. The sun rises and bathes the entire landscape in a brilliant red - an impressive natural spectacle and at the same time a reward for getting up early. Another Ovo-Sport and a sip from the thermos bottle and the 50-metre ascent to the Rottalsattel, our key point today, begins. At the Rottalsattel, the anniversary pick serves as an anchor for the rope, so that our following rope teams can ascend comfortably. Now the route leads us steeply up to the summit of the Jungfrau. We made it - Barbara, Ueli, Renate, Anja, Stefan, Christian, Sandra and Tina are standing on the summit of the Jungfrau together with mountain guide Freddy and the anniversary pick! What a view and what an achievement. Congratulations. This was also the first time the anniversary pick had been on the Jungfrau.

The fresh wind doesn't exactly invite us to linger, so we soon start our descent again. Concentrating, we descend to the Rottalsattel and abseil down to the glacier. Now we descend over the glacier slope and quickly get back to the Jungfraujoch. At 11.15 a.m. we meet our colleagues Tatjana and Michelle there, who were on the Mönch with mountain guide Loïc.
