Via Ferrata Ostegg
The Ostegg hut was built for the 100th anniversary of the Grindelwald Mountain Guide Association. The small hut is located on a grassy shoulder at 2317m at far end of the Eiger's north-east ridge (the Mittellegigrat). The last part of the hut approach leads over a via ferrata. Day 1: Ascent via the via ferrata to the Ostegghütte
After meeting in Grindelwald and a short gear check, we take the cablecar up to the Eiger Glacier. From here we hike along the Eiger Trail beneath the mighty Eiger North Face. We do not descend to Alpiglen, but follow the hiking trail towards Gletscherschlucht/Grindelwald. At Rinderalp we can sit down and enjoy a lunch from our rucksacks – great views over the Grindelwald valley. At about 1750m the path to Ostegg branches off and becomes narrower. This leads over meadows and some steep rock to the start of the via ferrata. The Ostegg via ferrata is short but crisp. There is no cable over the first rock step, so full concentration is required! Through a small gorge we climb more rock steps, this time made safe by steel cables. Next comes the crux: a vertical section of the via ferrata – which the guide will coach you through. A final rising traverse leads over rock and screes to the Ostegghütte. The hut is situated on a kind of "infinity lawn" – an amazing spot. We make ourselves comfortable in the little hut, watch the sunset and cook together.
Day 2: Descent to Grindelwald
After the unique sunrise in the morning we leave the Ostegghütte and descend the via ferrata and hiking trail to the path junction from the day before. From here we now head in the direction of «Bonera/Grindelwald». We descend through meadows and forest towards the forefield of the Lower Grindelwald Glacier, stopping for lunch somewhere on the way. After a final steep descent through the forest, we finally reach the Grindelwald glacier gorge. From here we take the local bus back to Grindelwald.

Trip status for group courses
1-2 days before your tour or course we will review the weather forecast and conditions with the mountain guide to determine if we can operate. We will contact you by phone with an update.
Minimum of participants (group tours)
As soon as the minimum number of participants is reached, we will send you a confirmation by email.
Cancellation
If we have to cancel your tour, you have the option to reschedule to a new date, or you will receive a full refund.
Equipment
Please refer to the equipment list for your tour or course. At our shop in Grindelwald, you can purchase technical equipment, mountain clothing, shoes, and backpacks. We also have technical equipment available for rent.
Clothing
Choose functional clothing that is moisture-wicking and quick-drying. Dress in layers so you can easily react to temperature changes. The range at our shop in Grindelwald is tailored to mountain tours and our expert staff are happy to advise you on the best clothing for your tour or course.
Lunch
Lunch is not included in the offer. We recommend bringing bars, dried fruits, nuts, or a sandwich. The amount you will need to drink depends on your individual needs and the length of the tour. We recommend .75 -1.5 liters of water, warm tea, isotonic drinks, or whatever you prefer. We also recommend that you hydrate enough the day before, so your body is well prepared for the tour.
Huts
A mountain hut is not a hotel. Running water is not guaranteed and electricity is not available everywhere, so it is not always possible to charge batteries or phones. If you have special dietary needs, please inform us in advance so we can make arrangements with the hut.
Safety
Our tours and courses are led by IVBV certified mountain guides or mountain guide aspirants. We prioritise your safety by requiring regular training to ensure our guides have relevant, up to date knowledge. Outdoor is certified by the Swiss Council for Accident Prevention (BFU) and our safety and emergency concepts are audited by this organization annually.
