Ski Tour Wetterhorn

The Wetterhorn stands and watches majestically over Grindelwald. To reach the summit of this impressive mountain on skis you will need to be well prepared, as the tour is not without its challenges. From Rosenlaui we ascend along the summer path towards Dossenhütte. At the Rosenlaui bivouac we turn off to the Roselaui glacier and follow it to the Wellhornsattel. Now we traverse to the Wettersattel and walk the last part of the ascent with crampons and ice axe. The view from the top of the Wetterhorn is unique: on one side the glacier landscape of the Bernese Alps, on the other side the lush green meadows waking up from their winter sleep. The descent back to Rosenlaui is ingenious - sometimes steep, sometimes flat, sometimes easy, sometimes challenging. We have to stay focussed til the very end to make this skitour a complete success.

Day 1: Ascent from Rosenlaui to the Wetterhorn 3692m

After meeting in Rosenlaui, the approach starts along the deep Rosenlaui Gorge. Some steep sections leading up through the forest already call for excellent kick turn ability. Once out of the woods the valley opens up and flattens out for a while. After joining the moraine, the route leads more steeply up in the direction of the Rosenlaui bivouac. Hereabouts, we tend to make a quick pit stop. From there the route leads out across the Rosenlaui glacier, then up to the Wellhornsattel. After a short descending traverse, the following, moderately-angled glacier will lead us up to the Wetterhornsattel and ski depot. From here we will leave the skis, don crampons and climb the snow couloir, or rock steps beside it, to gain the summit. This is a steep, serious climb. From the summit we will be rewarded with impressive views down to Grindelwald and across to the Eiger. We'll descend the same way back to our skis, and enjoy a magnificent ride back down to Rosenlaui. A long, scenic and inspiring journey has come to an end.
