In winter, two worlds sit close together here. By train and mountain railway, you reach the ski areas of the Jungfrau Region in 20 to 60 minutes, between roughly 1,600 and 2,970 meters. Down in the valley, you race across Lake Brienz in a jetboat, paddle a kayak or jump from 4,000 meters.

Up top, it’s snowshoes, sleds, skis or ice axes. Down below, it’s the lake and the sky. The two combine easily.

Winter Highlights

Six tours and experiences for winter: three in the snow and on the ice, three on the lake and in the air.

November to May: How the Winter Season Unfolds

November

Higher up, there’s often snow already, and many mountain railways close for maintenance. From November, the jetboat, e-bike, kayak and paragliding tours run in the winter program. On top of that, there are the fondue floats on Lake Brienz, skydiving and the Indoor Ropes Park in Grindelwald.

December to February

From December, snowshoe tours, sledding, ski tours and ice climbing start as soon as snow and ice allow. From mid-December, the ski school also teaches in groups. February is statistically the driest month, with more clear days than many people expect.

March to May

The days get longer, and higher up there’s often firn snow. From March, ski tours on 4,000-meter peaks and the Haute Routes begin, running until the end of May. Ice climbing in Grindelwald ends in mid-March, and most snowshoe and sledding tours end at the end of March.

Between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, winter also happens on the water. The Winter Jetboat does its 360-degree spins on Lake Brienz. On the fondue floats, you sit in the boat with a blanket and a caquelon, the fondue pot. In a dry suit, you can even paddle across the lake by kayak. The Winter E-Bike Tour follows the lakeshores to a cheese tasting and a chocolate tasting.

From the air, you see both lakes and the Bernese Alps at once: on a skydive from 4,000 meters or on a tandem paragliding flight from Beatenberg. At the Indoor Ropes Park in Grindelwald, you climb through courses modeled on the first ascent of the Eiger North Face, whatever the weather.

In strong wind or heavy rain, boat tours may be postponed, and skydiving needs clear enough skies. For more ideas, read our article Six winter activities in the valley.

In the Snow: Snowshoeing and Sledding

Snowshoeing is the easiest way into snowy terrain. The guided beginner tour doesn’t require any particular fitness. We provide the snowshoes and poles, and you bring warm, waterproof shoes. Below the Eiger North Face or at the Wetterhorn, you walk right in front of the region’s most famous mountain faces, and at full moon, at night too.

The guided sledding tour runs 4.6 kilometers through snowy forests. Sunset Sledding ends the day with cheese fondue, and on Night Sledding you ride under the stars past a frozen waterfall. Want it all in one day? Choose the combination of snowshoeing, fondue in a mountain hut and a sled ride back to the valley, in 5 hours. For families, Bodmi Arena in Grindelwald has a magic carpet lift and sled rental right on site.

In winter, avalanche and snow conditions decide where you go. Our mountain guides assess every day which tour the conditions allow, and they adjust the route and start time.

To get started, there’s the Taster Course Ski Touring in Grindelwald: 1 day, no experience needed, covering ascent, descent and equipment. From December to March, day tours lead to summits like Hundshorn, Schwalmere or Gemmenalphorn. From March, you head up 4,000-meter peaks on skis and along the Haute Routes.

Ice climbing starts once the waterfalls are frozen and the ice holds. In Grindelwald, the approach is short, and in the taster course you climb on a top rope with no experience needed. If you want to go off-piste, you need an avalanche transceiver, a shovel and a probe, and you need to know how to use them. You can learn that in one day on the avalanche course in Grindelwald.

Ski School Grindelwald

Our Swiss Ski School Grindelwald teaches children and adults, from your first day on skis to freestyle courses. Group lessons start in mid-December, and private lessons for ski, snowboard and telemark from December. If you’re starting from scratch, Learn to Ski in 3 Days takes you through the basics step by step.

With Family Fun, you learn to ski in the morning and go sledding in the afternoon. At Bodmi Arena, night skiing under floodlights runs until 7 p.m. through the end of February. You can rent skis and snowboards directly from us. Find out more at the Swiss Ski School Grindelwald.

For Groups and Teams

In winter, we build with whatever the snow gives us. Our team organizes programs that work outdoors, even in the cold:

Igloo Building
With snow saws and spades, you build an igloo together.

Duration: half a day.

People are building an igloo in the snow, surrounded by mountains. Some are wearing winter clothing and hats.

Team Sledding Experience
Guided runs together, which can be combined with mulled wine or fondue.

Duration: half a day.

People sitting on sleds in snow at night, wearing winter clothing and headlamps, with mountains behind.

Torchlight Hike
You walk through the winter night by torchlight.

Duration: from 1 hour.

People walking with torches on a snowy mountain path at dusk.

Bad weather doesn’t automatically mean cancellation. We monitor conditions closely and stick to our safety limits. Tell us your group size, date and budget, and we’ll send you a matching offer.

Winter Weather: What to Expect

In January, daytime highs in Interlaken are around 2°C (36°F), dropping to around minus 4°C (25°F) at night. Higher up, it’s colder, and on a sled or the jetboat the wind from the ride adds to the chill.

Dress in layers and pack a beanie and gloves, plus warm, waterproof shoes for tours in the snow. Whether a tour goes ahead is decided by our teams based on weather, snow and avalanche conditions on the day. If something has to be canceled, you can rebook, switch to another experience or get a refund. For rainy days, check out our tips for rainy days.
